Jaran kepang, sometime is also known as jathilan or kuda lumping, a Javanesse tradition that combine between traditional dancing art and magic. Jaran kepang is normally perform by group (4-6) people dancer who dance on a horse toy and traditional gamelan music is played during the show. It looks like a normal dance by a group until at a point (not always happen) dancer would enter entrance mode, where they would dance uncontrolled and eat whatever thing would be given by audience, on most of show, audience would prepare shredded glass to be eaten by Jaran kepang dancer who enter trance mode.

They play with sand, they work with sand, they sleep with sand even when they pregnant they would giving birth on sand. No wonder then, Legung people also known as “Sandman”.

Legung Village, situated on Sumenep District of Madura Island, East Java Indonesia, we can reach this Island from Surabaya then go either by car/motorcycle via Suramadu Bridge that connect Java Island and Madura Island or land our car/motorcycle to Sea Ferry. If it would be your first visit to this village, I bet you, we would be amuse to see how sand are everywhere on this village, all house will have sand all over the place, even if we go further inside, we won’t find any bed but spread of sand instead.

Ciwidey is famous as one of West Java tourism place, not just because is a mountain range, where we get relax and breath fresh air, but also because of its strawberry farming. This post will brief about our family last trip experience to this lovely place.

The Route
Ciwidey situated on south area of Bandung, capital of Indonesia’s West Java province and about 200 miles aways from Jakarta’s International Airport Sukarno Hatta, best way we could get to reach Ciwidey is trough Cipularang toll road, we should take Kopo/Soreang exit and turn right, just follow the sign and within next 22 miles we should reach Ciwidey. Be aware of traffic on Kopo traditional market place, combo of it peak time, undisciplined driver and huge number of motor cycle will make our journey longer than our expectation.
