Sharing my experience: find good web hosting company
If we want to manage our website or blog professionally then web hosting would play vital role. Choosing a good web hosting company is also as vital as manage our web itself, because it will be foundation on how our web would be build on. Here are some of my advice on find webhosting company based on my personal experience.
Don’t get tricked into cheap hosting package
When I hosted my web for very first time, cost was my top consideration. I would see everything based on how much I should spend for that hosting. I then found a hosting company who gave 1GB linux hosting with rate only $8/yr with minimum contract is 3 years (so $24 total). I registered that $24 hosting package with expectation that my site would be activated soon, but what I got was just a scam … my site life about 3 months after, and all the features provided by hosting company were garbage, so difficult to be used (no cpanel) and customer service were so ridiculous, I have to dictate them for every setting I want which supposed to be default due to security reason.
However, there are some web hosting company who offer low price but have an excellent service to its customer
Understanding the package we will get
There is an old Indonesian saying, "teliti sebelum membeli" which mean be detail before purchase. I think this saying is also applicable for purchasing a webhosting package. Aside than consideration on price, we need to know what will we pay for that amount. Focus on limitation we will get. Term like storage size, traffic, maximal email, maximal subdomain are terms that we need to evaluate more seriously.
Out-of-the box tools
Nowadays, there are many tools we can use to ease our day. Unfortunately some of these tools need super user (root/administrator) privileges to be installed and if we dealing with shared hosting server, this would be difficult. Therefore by understanding what tools provide by our webhosting out-of-the-box will help us alot to maintain our web in the future. Me, for instance, will always looking for a webhosting who provide fantastico for easy installation, cpanel for easy administration and webalizer or webstat to monitor my web traffic.
My friend ever bought a $50/yr linux hosting for his blog, but no fantastico installed, so what he has to do was installing blog on his local computer and deployed it to hosting server thru FTP, that simple for such technical dude, but for non-technical it was like life in the middle of nowhere.
Customer Service and Service Level Agreement
Hosting is a long term deal, that is why we would have long relationship also with hosting company. Read their Service Level Agreement to know what value they promise to us, like uptime rate for instance, which is very vital for our web life.
Hosting Company Customer Service is also need to be reviewed. Don’t just trust on what they say on their web profile, but read review from other person who ever use same service from respective hosting company
Review, review and review
Final task we need to do before purchasing a hosting package from web hosting company is read review from other. Read more and more, get at least 10 review. Don’t read just one that say if this hosting company is good or bad, but try to find other comparison. Google will help you a lot on this just googling for "xxx review" or "xxx good reviews" or "xxx sucks"
