Wireless charging, charge your mobile without wires

27 July 2009 4 Comments

Wireless, a new concept that somewhat has ease many things in our life, less effort on managing our cable and we can freely go from one place to another as long it wireless cover these area. Talking about Wireless, Palm has implement a very sophisticated wireless technology on its product, Palm Pre. Touchstone, an accessory for Palm Pre, designed to charge Palm Pre’s battery without any interconnecting wires. Palm Pre’s user simply place Pre on touchstone and a strong magnet will align Pre in correct position for charging.

Same technology has also been researched by another telecommunication player, Nokia. An article on Gizmodo says currently Nokia researcher have hatched a plan for a system that will charge phone using ambient electromagnetic radiation. If they could make it happen, Touchstone will be history, because it seems Nokia will suck electricity from thin air :) cool …

Wireless charging actually isn’t new innovation, Nicola Tesla, an eccentric Serbian-American scientist transmitted 100 million volt of electricity wirelessly to light up 200 bulbs and run electric motor on late of 19th century. It just now become interesting because now wireless charging deal with instrument that we used on daily basis :)

Well, now we have wireless phone, wireless keyboard and mouse, wireless control, wireless charging … so what next would be researched by our engineer? I hope that won’t be wireless sex, frankly speaking, I prefer to do it conventionally :)

As we complain that all those transformer packs for every device form a phantom electrical load for as long as AC power reaches them, NOW we have this method of transferring energy which is much LESS efficient than the transformers.

    SO.

Waste more energy in the name of ‘convenience’?

When I say efficient, I mean power power converter efficiency: the power measured coming into the charged device divided by the power measured as consumed by cordless charging base while charging the device. The greek letter is eta. Engineers should know this equation.
