Social media and shorten URL

3 July 2009 3 Comments

I have just join with Twitter about month ago and start to active on it recently, hehehe I know what you think and I’m not leaving within a cave :P One thing that I see on social media status broadcast like Twitter is how people utilize shorten URL feature on their status.

Sorten URL is a new service offered by Internet Site to shorter a web link. Some feature of having shorten URL are:

  • Easier to memorize
  • Easier to be written on status due to character limitation
  • Hide some information that store on a web link, for instance: referral ID or User ID on a affiliate marketing web link

When shorten URL was published for first time, I knew it would be booming, but by that time, I only saw it as a tool to make a link be easier to memorize, see this, which one would be nice to introduce to someone else http://www.ariefdarmawan.net/2009/06/know-your-baldness-hair-loss/ or http://xr.com/knowyourbaldness, even tough both will redirect to same address but second one is better approach.

Link your shorten URL with Social Media

Since era of internet marketing change to Web 2.0, where a person or institution can spread their word easily to their community via site like Facebook or Twitter, shorten URL is a hero, many member of social media update their status to broadcast a web post and surely a link need to be attached to ask other user who follow their status to click on it and give the link more traffic. Even better, some shorten service URL provide feature to automatically post their new shorten URL as a new Twitter status … coolz

One thing that I don’t know yet how this would be in the future, is to monetize this kind of feature, as for now many shorten URL provider only get their revenue from either advertising or paypal donation … well, let see :)
