Have you know about OpenID ?

4 July 2009 2 Comments

When we would like to post a comment on a blog, most likely they would ask for an OpenID to identify our self, normally we would enter either our blogger or wordpress or some other ID that belong to major provider, but what if we want to use our own Url as our OpenID :)

OpenID is an open decentralized standard for user authentication and access control, allowing a user to login to many services with same digital identity. An OpenID would be seen as a form of a unique Url and it’s authenticated by an OpenID provider. OpenID authentication is used and provided by several large websites. Normally all of us, who connect with cyber world would already have one or more OpenID accounts. Major internet company like Google, Yahoo!, MSN, AOL, Facebook, WordPress etc are listed as OpenID provider, so eventually when we registered as member of one of those company then we automatically inherit an OpenID.

So, what if we want to claim OpenID using our own web Url, because all provider will provide OpenID but with their own format, WordPress for instance will provide http://username.wordpress.com as standard format for their OpenID, you may already have one, but someday when you would buy your own domain or perhaps you already have one, then it gonna be ridiculous if you still use your WordPress’ OpenID rather than using your own Url as your OpenID. Luckily, you don’t need to worry about that, there are some provider who allow you to delegate your own Url into your OpenId, so instead of having http://provider/username or http://username.provider we can easily use http://ourowndomain.com as our OpenID

Good thing about using our own domain as our OpenID is that when we post a comment or we are registered on a service using our OpenID, it will also put a backlink to our site, it gonna be good for increase our rank and kind of easy way to promote our site, isn’t ? :D

One of OpenID provider that I used to delegate my OpenID to my own domain is ClaimId, there are also plenty others provider, you can find them thru Google :) so happy hunting for our OpenID
