Bounce rate, friend or foe ?

14 July 2009 4 Comments

Bounce rate is an index to measure how many time a visitor of our blog enter on our web and exit from same page without exploring another page. Higher bounce rate normally would be followed by less average time of visit on our website. Bad news is, this mean that visitor are not enjoying their visit to our website and decide to leave it soon.

What factors that could trigger our bounce rate become higher ? here are some of them:

Landing page is not compelling enough
First impression on a landing page is imperative to make user stay on our website. If landing page is not compelling enough for them to go further, it would be disaster for us. Topic that is not suit with visitor expectation, unstructured not eye friendly web layout and content that is not informative are some reasons that make a landing page is not compelling visitor to stay longer.

Loading time is too long
Some people would think to have some image to prettify our web, also have more widget like counter, shoutbox, visitor demography mapping to make website intuitive to their visitor. But, what they don’t know is all of those image and background script will consume more bandwith and make page loading longer. So instead of having a visitor who read the content, they would navigate to other web due to waiting time. Images and widgets are good, but we really need to be more wise to use it.

Landing page is perfect, but what next ?
Okay, we have did our homework, our landing page is perfect, visitor like it, they read it word by word, they get inspiration from it. So they satisfy and finish with this page, they would like to go to other page, so would looking for another link on our landing page that could make interesting enough to click on it. Unfortunately they find none, so what they do next ? no option, they have to leave our website. How bad is that could be :(

An excellent outsider link
Sometime (I think most of the time hehehhe), we need to monetize our website, so advertisement link come to address that requirement. A very nice wording, sometime with nice graphical display come with a link into our web page. We know that it would make people interesting to click it, but one thing we forget, it’s targeted on same window as our web, and when visitor click on it, they are gone from our traffice.

So, how to write a page that will bring less bounce rate to our website based on above issue

  • Write a nice post with compelling topic and informative content
  • Check our layout, is it readable ?
  • Check our wording and grammar ?
  • Use image and bacground script wisely
  • Give link to related post or our top post
  • Target any external link to new window if possible

Have nice writing and hope it would be useful for us :)
